Costco (COST) increased their dividend today. The increase was 14% - sweet!
While COST has a low current dividend yield, it sure has been "moving on up" for the last several years. Even better are the special dividends they provide.
In Dec 2012, they paid a $7/shr special dividend followed by a $5/shr special dividend in early 2015. Finally, in 2017 they paid another $7/shr special dividend.
While there is no guarantee, it is likely that there will be another large special dividend in 2018/19.
Many people focus too intensely on only the capital gains in their stocks, but, over time, dividends can and do add a large component to returns.
Everyone wishes they purchased a stock and it immediately booms up through the roof. But remember, slow and steady can win the race too!
