Credit cards are the major reason.  No cash is exchanged at the time and transactions seem relatively painless.  The joy of acquiring is enforced without the pain of clear use of cash.

On marketplace podcast today they were talking about checks still being used.

Yes, I still use checks. Maybe that makes me a dinosaur, but it is easier to keep your spending in "check" that way.
