First I must tell you that I am a Penn State fan. I am from Harrisbrug, PA and I earned by MBA at Penn State.
For my Pittsburgh friends who may feel at odds with Lou Holtz, keep in mind that Lou Holtz coached Bill Cowher when he played for NC State.
Prior to joining the big ten conference, PSU always played Notre Dame in football. It was always a good game because ND was tough. I learned long ago in college wrestling and playing judo that it was always better to face a tough competitor than to take an easy W. When you are challenged, you grow stronger and add to your skill sets.
I listened to this book on audio. It was narrated by the one and only Lou Holtz. While Lou has a slight speech impediment, he is crystal clear in his approach to life and life’s challenges.
Lou Holtz talks about the numerous challenges he faced over his long career. He discusses how he thought about those challenges and what approaches he took. We have a tendency to think of successful people as always winning and on top. Lou’s career was anything, but a straight line up. There were many twists, turns, ups and downs.
For anyone who has suffered serious setbacks in their life (which is probably everyone), I would recommend reading this book. I think it is even better to hear it from Lou himself on audio. Regardless of his speak impediment, it feels better to hear it in his straight shooting style, as if Lou himself is talking to you one-on-one.
